2015 - Residential building renovation

Location: Zurich
Construction type: Retrofit
Architect: Viriden+Partner AG
Year of construction: 1982, retrofit 2015-2016
Building typology: Residential MFH
Technological system: Cold facade
PV module: glass/glass module with monocrystalline cells
Orientation: South, East, West, North
Tilt angle: 90°
PV surface: 1’586 m²
Nominal power: 159 kWp
Energy production: 82’000 kWh/yr
Final yield: 334 kWh/kWp
Solar active surface ratio: >75% (facades)

This multi-family building, built in 1982, is the result of a retrofit intervention, with a forth-floor extension. Despite its surface area is increased by 36%, the energy consumption is decreased by 72%, from 343’400 kWh/yr to 96’900 kWh/yr.
The use of 34 cm of thermal insulation made it possible to obtain a very energy-efficient building whose photovoltaic facades and roof allow a production of 95’000 kWh/yr, thus making it almost totally autonomous (self-consumption of 98%).
The PV modules are covered with a layer of colored glass which reduces their efficiency of 39%, on the other hand, it adds architectural quality to the building, blending this technology into the facade in a discrete manner.
The new active layer smartly incorporates the extended part with the existing one. Even though the shape of the building is very articulated, thus not the most appropriate for a solar installation, this building proofs that with a proper planning it is possible to integrate a photovoltaic system even in situations that are not optimal, whether they are new buildings or renovations.

SOLAR ARCHITECTURE

Energy and architectural concept – Energy optimized
– Maximum power
– Partially adapted to building skin
– Roof
– Partially adapted to building skin
– Facade
– Total building skin
Energy and architectural language – Evident emphasized PV – Low recognizable PV – Hidden PV Mimicry

SOLAR AND BUILDING SKIN

Standardization vs customization – Standard PV components – Low customized components – Highly customized components
Building skin technology – Roof added system – Facade added system – Roof integrated system – Facade integrated system

SOLAR AND BUILDING ENERGY CONCEPT

Solar and building energy efficiency – No special energy target – Standard energy target – (state of art, normative) – High energy efficiency – (Passive-house, n-ZEB, PEB)
New building or refurbishment – New building – Refurbishment (ordinary building)

SOLAR AND URBAN CONTEXT

Solar and urban density – Low-density building – Medium-density urban context – High-density urban context
