Swiss Solar Prize 2024

18 November 2024

The over 500-year-old Evangelical Reformed Church in Trin, in the canton of Grisons, has been provided with a solar roof. A national first for an historic church, the project encountered some resistance from conservation authorities and the municipality. With this installation, the congregation wants to convey a clear message: the preservation of creation, a central mission of the church, requires not only words but, above all, concrete actions. In 1991, the then ARGE Solar 91 (now the Swiss Solar Agency) launched the Swiss Solar Prize, in partnership with Federal Councillor Adolf Ogi and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE). As part of this national project, local authorities, private companies and private citizens were encouraged to build solar installations, explicitly without using green spaces. Between 1990 and 2019, some 3,648 entries were submitted for the Solar Prize, 429 of which were awarded the Swiss Solar Prize.

Winners of the 2024 Award

10 Swiss Solar Prizes were awarded to an influential figure, an institution and the people behind solar projects. Among the standout winners in this year’s edition were projects that integrate cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices, making a strong case for the growing role of solar power in the Swiss energy transition.

The awards ceremony, which took place in Schwyz the 30th of October, underscored the collaborative spirit of the Swiss energy transition and provided a glimpse of the innovative solutions emerging from the country’s research, industry, and communities.

As Switzerland continues to lead the way in sustainable energy practices, the Swiss Solar Prize 2024 celebrates the people and organizations that are driving the solar revolution forward. The diversity of this year’s winners highlights the broad potential for solar energy across sectors: from architecture and technology to community engagement and research—paving the way for a brighter, greener future.

We invite you to take a look at all the prizes and diplomas by visiting the website of the Swiss Solar Agency. Our sunniest congratulations to all candidates, choosing solar energy is a victory in itself.
