A unique photovoltaic system is housed at the new campus of Franklin University Switzerland.

This highly innovative project is based on the requirement to shade the transparent volume of educational and communal spaces in summer and to allow the sun to warm the building in winter.

Two rows of mechanically controlled vertical louvers allow to shade the facade from the sun. The louvers are combined with white photovoltaic modules, a georeferenced software controls their rotation to ensure the best sun exposure and the highest efficiency. The facade is one of the first dynamic photovoltaic projects in Europe, fully architecturally integrated, which guarantees high level of sustainability, thermal and visual comfort.

The dynamic photovoltaic louvres have been engineered and manufactured for this specific project. The multi crystalline modules and fitted with a tempered 4mm Suncol float satin front glass « Bianco Traffico » (white). The PV laminated glass has a specific power of 100 Wp/m2 and approximately 18 kWp was installed.

The realization of the installation has been made possible thanks to the renowned collaboration between Franklin University Switzerland, AIL SA, SUPSI-ISAAC and the involvement of several local partners operating in the field.
