Solar building materials are rapidly expanding across Europe, with rooftop systems still leading the market, while facades and other integrated applications are gaining momentum: marking a clear shift toward multifunctional, design-driven solar solutions in the built environment.
Developed within the European research project MC2.0 – Mass Customization 2.0 for Integrated PV (MCDUE), a new study by SUPSI provides an overview of solar building material manufacturers in Europe and highlights emerging trends in the building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) sector.
The analysis identifies 92 manufacturers active across Europe, with Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany hosting about half of the companies operating in this field.
A wide range of solutions is currently available: 89% of manufacturers offer roofing systems, 50% facade solutions, and 45% external elements such as solar shading devices or parapets. Around 36% provide solutions covering roofs, facades and external systems simultaneously, highlighting the increasing versatility of BIPV technologies.
European initiatives including the European Green Deal, the Renovation Wave and the Net Zero Industry Act are expected to strengthen the sector and accelerate the integration of renewable energy into buildings.
